An ode to the 20 year career of the WNBA's White Mamba

Diana Taurasi's retirement marks the end of an extraordinary era in women's basketball. After 20 legendary seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, the GOAT quietly announced her retirement on February 25th, leaving behind a legacy that has forever transformed the game. I knew it was coming. We all knew it was coming. But that doesn’t make the news any less painful. Also known as the "White Mamba" - a nickname given by Kobe Bryant himself - Taurasi's career statistics tell only part of her incredible story:

  • 11-time WNBA All-Star

  • 3-time WNBA Champion

  • All-time WNBA scoring leader

  • 6 Olympic gold medals

  • 3 NCAA championships at UConn

But beyond the numbers, Taurasi revolutionized women's basketball with her fearless playing style, clutch performances, and unmatched competitive spirit. She didn't just play the game - she redefined it. Her impact extends far beyond the court, inspiring countless young athletes to pursue their dreams in basketball.

Photos from the Phoenix Mercury and Bleacher Report

As we bid farewell to one of the greatest to ever step on a basketball court, we celebrate not just her athletic achievements, but her role in elevating women's basketball to new heights. DT's influence will continue to shape the sport for generations to come. The WNBA loses more than just a player with DT's retirement - it loses a cultural icon who helped build the league into what it is today. Her legacy ensures that the future of women's basketball burns brighter than ever.

What do you think Diana Taurasi will do next?

After a well deserved rest and press run, of course.

Weekly Watchlist

Since there is no “The Last Dance” docu-series for Diana Taurasi (yet), here’s what’s on my watchlist until March Madness kicks off later this month.

For the Win: NWSL on Amazon

This docu-series will follow the 2024 NWSL playoffs and championship game. It will feature players like Alex Morgan, Trinity Rodman, Croix Bethune, and Marta. The series will include exclusive interviews, locker-room access, and match highlights. The cameras were on, I repeat, the cameras were on! As much as I would’ve liked to see a women’s basketball counterpart to Court of Gold, this will have to do.

Running Point on Netflix

I hear that if you’re a fan of Ted Lasso, you’ll like this show. This is a comedy series produced by Mindy Kaling that is loosely based on the life of L.A. Lakers' president Jeanie Buss. Cheers to the women in the front office.

Offseason FC (Season 1)

This series was co-produced by Alexis Ohanian and released exclusively on Twitter and YouTube. The series follows Midge Pierce and NWSL athletes as they train in the Offseason. I’ve watched the first episode and was sincerely struck by Lo Labonta’s admission that she was honored as one of the best 11 in the league, but wasn’t even in the top 11 highest-paid players on her team. 🤯 Pay the girls!

Sprint on Netflix (Seasons 1 and 2)

Now that indoor track season is coming to a close and outdoor track season starts soon, this is the perfect time to get hype for track athletes on the big stage. Season 1 introduces Sha’Carri Richardson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson, Gabby Thomas, and Elaine Thompson-Herah. Season 2 introduces Melissa Perry, Twanisha Terry, and Julien Alfred. I have my feelings about how they filmed the series as a whole, but I do think it’s worth a watch and gets you excited about the sport.

The Last Word 🥂

I’m starting off Women’s History Month with this video of the Phoenix Suns naming their favorite women athletes. Tell your favorite woman athlete you appreciate her today, this month, and always!

Penned,

Angela 🤙🏾✨
